François Toussaint Louverture, born May 20, 1743, was a former Haitian slave who led the only successful slave revolt in modern history. Standing steadfastly, he fought to end slavery and gain Haiti’s independence from European powers, France and Spain. Forming an army of former slaves and deserters from the French and Spanish armies, he trained his followers in guerrilla warfare and successfully ended slavery in Hispaniola by 1795. #blackhistory #blackhistory365 #blackexcellence #toussaintlouverture #blackgirlmagic #blackboyjoy #trainthemup #knowledgeofself #melanin #melaninpoppin #culture #character #heritagetours #followus #TV3C

Celebrating the birthday of François-Dominique Toussaint L'Ouverture/Toussaint Bréda/Toussaint L'Ouverture, the revolutionary spearhead and organizational leader of the Haitian revolution. He led the only successful slave revolt in modern history, ending the practice in Hispaniola (the island of Haiti) by 1795. He is credited with uniting the revolutionary forces, as well as leading many of the most important battles. Toussaint L’Ouverture was also involved in agriculture pursuits. He managed a small coffee plantation, and believed that the long-term freedom of the people of Saint-Domingue (HAITI) depended on the economic viability of the colony. Toussaint L'Ouverture changed the world political establishment. He was a catalyst that changed the geography of the Western Hemisphere, and initiated the end for European colonial domination in the Americas.

Happy birthday to Toussaint L’Overture, one of the architects of the Haitian revolution which was considered one of the most successful revolutions in history and the beginning of the end of worldwide slavery. Once Haiti secured its independence from France they selflessly and fearlessly worked to end slavery for everyone in the Americas and across the world. It’s something that so few people know about, how much this little country did for the good of humanity. Give thanks to the ancestors 🙏🙏🇭🇹🇭🇹 . "At the end of the 18th century a self-educated slave with no military training drove Napoleon out of Haiti and led his country to independence. . The remarkable leader of this slave revolt was Toussaint Breda (later called Toussaint L'Ouverture, and sometimes the “black Napoleon”). Slave revolts from this time normally ended in executions and failure – this story is the exception. . It began in 1791 in the French colony of Saint Dominique (later Haiti). Though born a slave in Saint Dominique, Toussaint learned of Africa from his father, who had been born a free man there. He learned that he was more than a slave, that he was a man with brains and dignity. He was fortunate in having a liberal master who had him trained as a house servant and allowed him to learn to read and write. Toussaint took full advantage of this, reading every book he could get his hands on. He particularly admired the writings of the French Enlightenment philosophers, who spoke of individual rights and equality. . In 1789 the French Revolution rocked France. The sugar plantations of Saint Dominique, though far away, would never be the same. Spurred on by such Enlightenment thinkers as Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the early moderate revolutionaries considered seriously the question of slavery. Those moderate revolutionaries were not willing to end slavery but they did apply the "Rights of Man" to all Frenchmen, including free blacks and mulattoes (those of mixed race). Plantation owners in the colonies were furious and fought the measure. Finally the revolutionaries gave in and retracted the measure in 1791. . The news of this betrayal triggered mass slave revolts in Saint Dominique, and Toussaint became the leader of the slave rebellion. He became known as Toussaint L'Ouverture (the one who finds an opening) and brilliantly led his army. He successfully fought the French (who helped by succumbing to yellow fever in large numbers) as well as invading Spanish and British." -historywiz.com . . . #thehaitianroom #haitianleader #haitianpeople #toussaintlouverture #haitian #haitians #ayisyen #ayiti #haiti #zoes #haitianheritage #haitianheritagemonth

François-Dominique Toussaint L'Ouverture (20 May 1743 – 7 April 1803), also known as  #ToussaintLOuverture or  Toussaint Bréda, was the best-known leader of the Haitian Revolution. He became a leader of the growing resistance after the bloodoath at #boiscaiman and his military and political acumen saved the gains of the first black insurrection in November 1791. He first fought for the Spanish against the French; then for France against Spain and Great Britain; and finally, he fought in behalf of #Haiti in the era of Napoleonic France. He helped transform the slave insurgency into a revolutionary movement. By 1800 Saint-Domingue, the most prosperous French slave colony of the time, had become the first free colonial society to have explicitly rejected race as the basis of social ranking. On January 2, 1804 they declared themselves the first black republic and later empire in the western hemisphere. This statue of President & General Toussaint still stands today in the Haitian capital of Port au Prince on the 276th anniversary of his birth #ourstory

Happy Birthday to our #ancestor! He will eternally be my favorite that paved the way for alot of these leaders past and present that work in the community. He was the voice that didn't back down and he told the ugly truth. He had all daughters. He touched many lives with his glow up. I am grateful for what he did. My dad took me with him to see the Spike Lee movie " X" when it first came out. I felt I had the coolest dad in the world for that. He knows it. By creating a society in which all people, of all colors, were granted freedom and citizenship, the Haitian Revolution forever transformed the world. It was a central part of the destruction of slavery in the Americas, and therefore a crucial moment in the history of democracy, one that laid the foundation for the continuing struggles for human rights everywhere. In this sense we are all descendents of the Haitain Revolution, and responsible to these ancestors. #haitianflagday #haiti #boxing #basquiat #art #clubbercreed #revolution #change #toussaintlouverture
