#nikemissilesite The boys of course had to check this out. This island was not the same as Ellis island, welcoming immigrants to the land of liberty and opportunity. I learned in 1882 the USA passed a law AGAINST Chinese immigration to the United States that was not repealed until World War 2 when China became our ally. Many Chinese came to this island with a hope for new life and died after being interred indefinitely on this island. It became a prison much like #Alcatraz. The Island was also a shipping and receiving point for men headed to the Pacific in #worldwar2#historylesson#angelislandstatepark#outrage
Turns out Alcatraz is interesting for a lot more reasons than I realized. Just 1 1/4 miles from #SanFrancisco, #Alcatraz started as a fort and then became a high security prison for until it closed in 1963. It was given to the National Park Service in 1973. Excellent audio tour through the cell block. Gardens there will follow in a separate post later in the trip.
