“The legendary author who imbued many with the power of imagination!” Would you ever forget the one who introduced you to a new magical realm for the first time in your life? The one who dared you to imagine, to dream and yet to get to know others who were not as privileged? Would you ever forget the first time you traveled to a world where you made friends with a little girl who owned a unique magic doll - a doll who would come to life every day and talk about almost everything?! Or to follow the adventures of the same girl who would befriend caring black crows who would teach her important life lessons?! Can you imagine a journey to the world in which “the legend of the sigh” would enlighten you to explore endless possibilities of life? In a world in which a “black little fish” would become your hero - a little hero who would decide not to live his life based on what fate had planned and to reach for the sea in the hope of living a better life.
Today, June 24th, on Samad Behragi’s 80th birthday, let us remember this renowned Iranian author, teacher, social critic, folklorist, and translator for all he did. He concentrated his significant efforts on raising awareness about shortcomings in the educational system of his country. Behrangi was the first author who made me fall in love with books in the first place! When I immigrated to Canada over 25 years ago, his books which I kept from the age of five, were the first to be placed in my carry-on. Behrangi’s stories kept you thinking about the lives of the other children (mainly the underprivileged) and encouraged you to hope for a better future. He wisely guided you to change your life, mostly through your initiatives to live better. At the age of 28, Behrangi drowned in Aras River, and many still believe he was drowned intentionally because of his political views. True or false, for many Iranian people, his loss was an unforgettable tragedy. Many of these faithful fans were born years after his death and came to know him only through his beautiful stories.
