I’m a mountain girl. Colorado born and raised. I am designed for hiking and climbing and camping and going off trail into the woods. I can identify different types of wildlife scat so I can tell who’s around me on the trails.
Last summer, my mom took me to her hometown in Cape Cod. I’d been to the beach a few times before, but I’d never seen the beach at sunset. Seeing millions of sunsets over the Rocky Mountains, you’d think I’d have seen the most stunning already, wrong. Watching the sun set over the water is a whole different party. As you can tell, I still scrambled up rocks and stood on them (old habits are hard to break I guess 🤷♀️) but the salt and humidity in the air while sea water tickled my toes was something new entirely. I’ve reflected a lot on what this shows us about people.
Rocky Mountain sunsets are unbeatably stunning.
Cape Cod sunsets are irreplaceably gorgeous.
Until I saw the beauty of one I never knew how much more I’d appreciate the beauty of the other. God made the wide expanses of water just as He made the towering beauties of mountains.
He made the river I danced in and the rocks I climbed up, and we humans made the piers and bridges and hiking trails so we could walk through, travel on, and take oddly aesthetic pictures where our green shirt makes us camouflage perfectly within God’s glorious creation. But bridges and piers and hiking trails could never compare to the beauty He made.
My friends, you can cover yourself with all the finest jewelry, paint yourself with the most expensive makeup, cloak yourself in silks and furs and dyes, but none of those things will make you more magnificent than the beauty your Creator created you with.
And yeah, someone else might be stunningly gorgeous, but so are you.
You’re the mountains and they’re the ocean, maybe you just are yet to truly see the mountains.
