Kenya is on high alert after 3 ebola cases were confirmed in neighbouring Uganda. This is feared to be a sign that ebola is spreading from DRC to neighbouring countries. Of the 3 confirmed cases, 2 of the patients died and one was repatriated, at their request, to DRC, so Uganda no longer has any confimed ebola cases. However, this doesn't mean that we shouldn't be concerned. Ebola is very much a public health issue, and key to beating the outbreak is creating awareness. So here's what you need to know about ebola. (Read about this on my blog - link in bio.)

Ebola lies just across the water. Catalysed by inequality and the chaos of conflict, the deadly virus continues to spread as the under-resourced infrastructure tasked with subduing this outbreak is overwhelmed. #Ebola #Virus Particles are long and thin with a central core containing single stranded RNA (ssRNA). There is a matrix protein layer surrounding the core which is adherent to the viral envelope (derived from the host cell during budding). On the cell surface are viral trimeric spikes (glycoprotein), that the virus uses to attach to target cells.

I remember vividly during the Ebola crisis this time over 3 years ago when the Infra Red Thermometer was hot cake selling like agege bread. . . Schools, Hospitals, Banks in fact all public places owned a minimum of two sets of this even though it was sold as high as N20,000...mhen..we did made lots of money on this then. Thank God those times are over and God has helped us still the Ebola plague. . . The message after the Ebola epidemic for me was that safety is important and should not be taken for granted. Now that a pack of this goes for N7,000. Do you still have it in your home? . . Let safety be your watch word. Let Ebola stay permanently out of Nigeria. With the recent Ebola outbreak in the DRC, my thoughts went back to 2014 and Liberia where death is always a lurking possibility. Malaria is something of a badge of honor. It’s a character-building experience, one that all Liberians have experienced time and time again. Sometimes, loved ones die, but the reason doesn’t always have to do with the mosquito-carrier. Death itself is not always a cause for concern. Rather so-called death warnings are much more frightening. These warnings may appear in the way of a certain type of bird squawks at night, in dreams or through voices heard in the heads of the living. Why these warnings exist is what concerns people. Diseases and accidents are merely vehicles to the spirit world, but they are not necessarily the root causes of death. Most Liberia’s four million live in the bush, in isolated communities surrounded by endless forests that have little access to hospitals and medicine. The leading cause of death in Liberia is malaria followed by diarrhea and acute respiratory infection, which triggers pneumonia. In one year, I experienced all three. As Liberia’s urban population grows, so does access to treatment for these illnesses and the public’s understanding of them. In the bush, however, medicine is simply too far away, and a death caused by severe diarrhea or pneumonia is quickly chalked up to sorcery. . . . . #liberia #Ebolaoutbreak #ebolacrisis #westafrica #adayinthelife #everydayafrica #everydayliberia #tbt #iloveliberia #storiesuntold #photosofinstagram

On #March30, 2018 there was a fire at major #hospital in #Liberia🇱🇷—”this is beyond heartbreaking. The local #healthteam, with support from Americares and others, had worked hard to move #thehospital forward,” says Michael in his latest blog post. Liberia faced civil war, #ebolacrisis, and a fragile health system. . The handshake finger snap is the most common way people greet each other around Liberia. It is an original take on funky handshakes and greetings used by Americans that can be slightly modified depending on how long the fingers stay locked. The sound of the snap might indicate a special bond with that person. The greeting came under fire following the 2014 ebola crisis when people were told not to touch each other. People who think the African-American colonizers might have brought this greeting in the 19th century might be suprised to read that In 1666, a French merchant on a tour of West Africa recorded a unique “manner of salutation” among the people at River Cess (coastal county) He noted, “they take our fore finger and thumb, into their hands, they pull them hard, and make them snap.” This likely the earliest recorded description of this unique handshake. 2014. . . . . #liberia #fingersnap #handshake #rivercess #monrovia #ebolacrisis #westafrica #greeterfalls #greetingsfromafrica #everydayafrica #x #goldenbeach
