Epigraph: Writing and Architecture
From Vitruvius’s De Architectura (Ten Books of Architecture, 30BC-15BC), to Alberti’s treatise De re aedificatoria (1442) to twentieth century volumes such as Aldo Rossi’s L'architettura della città (The Architecture of the City, 1966), the relationship between drawing, image and the written word has been integral to the intellectual advancement of Architecture. Both reflective and projective, the publication format has served as a pedagogical medium to facilitate the meeting of images and words. In architecture, books, magazines, pamphlets and other media have been an important repository, where the architect can pen a set of positions towards the discipline while also testing those hypotheses through drawing and modeling.
Today, as we confront a multi-media world where the printed book is being supplanted by a broad and diffused landscape of mediums and methods for communication that shorten our individual and collective attention spans, we as architects must rethink the role of the publication as an avenue to synthesize and disseminate architectural positions through our own creative work.
In this context, “Epigraph: Writing and Architecture” convenes multiple voices affiliated to the production of publications in architecture in order to deliberate on the instrumentality of writing within the fields of architecture and design. What is the role of the architectural monograph in contemporary practice? How does architecture as a discipline fit within the larger canons of academic publishing? And in a world where companies like Instagram and Google are fighting to capitalize on our attention, how has the audience for architecture publications changed in relation to the digital turn? These are some of the questions that the panel will address through presentations followed by dialogue.
