I wanted to highlight a little about our Down Syndrome journey.
Because of the pregnancy loss we had last February, I opted for the Panorama blood screen early on in my pregnancy. I did this at 10 weeks and it came back with a low fetal fraction. All that meant was that there wasn’t enough of the baby’s DNA in my blood stream. I opted not to retest because the anxiety of the test was more than it was worth. Fast forward to my 18 week appt and I was doing the quad screening. This tests for Trisomy 18 & 21, spins bifida and other major conditions. A week after my test, my doctor called me at 7pm on a Thursday night to let me know that I came back with a flag. Just based on my age and other factors I had a 1 in 270 chance of having a baby with Down Syndrome. But my blood work showed a 1 in 108 chance. We could have found out for sure, but I refused the amniocentesis. It is a procedure where they stick a needle in your belly to test the amniotic fluid. Risks are infections and miscarriage. It didn’t matter to Ulysses and I if she had it. I was referred to Maternal Fetal Medicine for my 20 week anatomy scan. At this point, there were no red flags indicating DS. She was even measuring to the day gestationally. They asked that I come back at 30 weeks because the physical markers are much more prominent. Her 30 week scan was the same. Her heart looked good, no double bubble in her stomach, no extra skin behind her neck. Looking back, the only factor that really I even hinted was that I had a high amount of amniotic fluid. But that could be caused by a lot of things so I didn’t think anything of it. Now knowing what we know, I still wouldn’t have done the diagnostic testing. It didn’t matter... it still doesn’t. While our journey may be hard and full of bumps, it has bonded our family like nothing else could! #astridvictoria #divinestrengthofds #nothingdownaboutit #theluckyfew #downsyndromeawareness #trisomy21 #extrachromosomeextralove #nicugrad #littlesister #quadscreening #genetictesting #bloodscreening #prenataltesting #wouldntchangeathing #fightlikeagirl
