“A wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.” (Jeremiah 2:24) . . . The onager (Equus hemionus), also known as the Asiatic Wild Ass, is a species of wild equid (or horse) native to Eastern and Western Asia, as well as the Middle East. Although not native to Israel anymore (it’s been regionally extinct since the 1920’s), the onager was once found there in huge herds. . . . One of the most adaptable desert animals, onagers are found mostly in dry, open habitats. Like other equids, they are grazers, meaning they feed on fresh grasses; they will occasionally go for fruit though. They are also one of the fastest animals alive, reaching top speeds of up to 40-43 miles per hour. Similar to what wild burros do (small donkeys), onagers will dig holes in dried up riverbeds to search for water. This makes them a keystone species, since other animals have been spotted using these holes. They can live up to 14 years in the wild, and double in captivity. . . . Onagers have a similar social structure to other equids; one male will usually control a harem of females, or the males will wander around in “bachelor” herds marking territories that attract herds of females. Some of their current predators include Persian leopards, grey wolves, and striped hyenas; the largest apex predators that share the same range. However, over a hundred years ago, they were primarily preyed on by Asiatic lions (extinct regionally) and Caspian tigers (completely extinct). . . . Although onagers seem to be doing fine in the wild, they are still faced with numerous threats such as habitat loss and poaching. They are classified by the IUCN as “Near Threatened,” and number only around 28,000 worldwide.

Photographing the 'Serengeti of the Sea' Douglas Croft @douglascroftimages uses his Tamron 18-400mm VC HLD zoom lens to capture the diverse marine life in Monterey Bay. That surprise factor is what's drawn Douglas to the Tamron 18-400mm VC HLD zoom lens for his adventures on the water. "That's what makes this lens outstanding," he says. "Because you often can't anticipate where or when photo-worthy moments are going to happen, if a breach starts happening 200 yards from the boat, I can zoom out to 400mm and be right on it. Then, if something takes place right next to the boat, I can pull back in. It's such a versatile lens. Plus the autofocus is awesome, and it's a light-enough lens that I can shoot all day with it. The moisture-resistant construction is handy as well, since we go out on the boat even if it's raining—the whales are out no matter what." Public notice: Grey Herons are bad asses and carnivorous. It's hard to tell here, but this birds wingspan can be up to 6 feet and it can stand a 3 feet tall. Grey herons are found throughout Europe, and parts of Asia and Africa. They prey on fish and small mammals mostly, and as pictured it can be a quick hunt. We would encourage you to look up histirical meanings of the Grey Heron in ancient cultures (Egypt/Western Asia are good ones) throughout the world, as there are some spectacular stories and beliefs. If you don't know, then know ya know...

Is this their first kiss? I had been for an hour seeing a group of rabbits running along the other side of this road and I was waiting for one to cross it and photograph that. However, two young kittens decided to show their love in public instead.

Rhino Update From Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage: It is with tears, a heavy heart and very mixed emotions that I write that little Isibindi passed away shortly before midnight after a very, very rough 56 hours. Deep sadness that she went through so much in her short life. Was so hoping and fighting to give her a chance just to be a little rhino and do calf things. But a part of me feels a deep relief - the last two days were hard and tough and she had so much to cope with. Little Bindi left us lying in my arms (we had no power so I had wrapped us both in a duvet to keep her warm) It never gets easier. RIP little bindi - may your spirit fly free. Thank you for all the incredible support and compassion. To the team on the ground here - humbled and proud. I have been with Isibindi constantly since she arrived a few days ago but with no water,no power, wet cold conditions and security issues this young and amazing group have made sure that the other rhino and Charlie have been cared for..and done so with such amazing attitude. Axel Tarifa, Shannon Westphal- very special people. Steven and NIcole - thank you. Browser or grazer? 🤔 The Greater one-horned or Indian rhino is difficult to categorize – sometimes a grazer and other times a browser. They like tall grasses, but also consume leaves, branches and submerged aquatic plants. Black-backed jackal #2016 #Black-backedjackal #Canismesomelas #fauna #grassland #jackal #KE #kenya #mammal #OlPejetaConservancy #wildlife The black-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas) is a canid native to two areas of Africa, separated by roughly 900 km. One region includes the southernmost tip of the continent, including South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. The other area is along the eastern coastline, including Kenya, Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, and Ethiopia. Compared to other members of the genus Canis, the black-backed jackal is a very ancient species, and has changed little since the Pleistocene, being the most basal wolf-like canine, alongside the closely related side-striped jackal. It is a fox-like animal with a reddish coat and a black saddle that extends from the shoulders to the base of the tail. It is a monogamous animal, whose young may remain with the family to help raise new generations of pups. The black-backed jackal is not a fussy eater, and feeds on small to medium-sized animals, as well as plant matter and human refuse. (Source: Wikipedia)
