Antofagasta, Chile. A moonscape running into the sea, dotted with evidence of transiting time: rocks and shells from eons ago, empty beer bottles and tossed couch cushions from yesterday. A land where men watch the sea from high up on cliffs above and know if it is a good day to fish. Others dirt bike or 4 wheel, or bbq on the beach. We pass a long stretch of colorful graves beside the road in the sand, some with names on them, or pictures of bones, and colorful beads hanging from crosses. A dog cemetery in the desert. Chileans take care of street dogs. They feed them, make sweaters for them, and build dog houses for them to sleep in during the winter. Apparently they also bury them when they die. Northern Chile is a land of contrast - stark dry desert beside stunning ocean; high rises out of a sprawling empty land with busy shopping malls and amusement parks; shocking beauty and abundant trash. Humans are messy, emotional, compassionate, irrational, resilient beings, wherever they are found.
